Senior Discounts
“Would you like to take advantage of our senior discount?” It’s a question that some Minneapolis seniors appreciate and others who are more young at heart revere. It also begs another question, what is a senior anyway? Medicare benefits begin at age 65, yet AARP starts dolling out their membership cards at age 50. You may hold the answer by confidently walking up to the counter of the establishments mentioned in this blog and proudly say, “I’d like the senior discount.”

Hundreds of restaurants, movie theaters and retailers across the Minneapolis and St. Paul area offer senior discounts, so for the benefit of Saint Therese residents, friends and family, we’ll focus our list on the northwest Minneapolis suburbs. We hope our residents in independent and assisted living apartments at Saint Therese of New Hope or Oxbow Lake in Brooklyn Park take advantage of our transportation services to enjoy these businesses who so generously offer them a discount. Likewise, families visiting one of our Saint Therese at St. Odilia residents may find a Shoreview shop or restaurant on the list to visit.

Restaurants
For a sweet treat and a burger, get 10% off at Culver’s (www.culvers.com) in Brooklyn Center, Plymouth and St. Anthony. Perkins Restaurant (www.perkinsrestaurants.com), including their locations in Crystal and Golden Valley, have a special discounted menu just for seniors. IHOP’s (www.ihop.com) 55+ specialty entrees include “Simple & Fit” lower calorie meals which can be found in Brooklyn Center and Coon Rapids.

Entertainment
For dinner and a show, try the New Hope Cinema Grill (www.newhopecinemagrill.com) where a senior ticket is just $3.00. Grandparents, bring your grandchildren, as kids age 2-11 also get in for $3.00! Mann Theatres (www.manntheatresmn.com) in Plymouth and Champlin offer seniors 60 and over tickets for just $6.25 while their Maple Grove location only charges $2.50. The first and third Tuesdays of each month are Senior Tuesdays at the Science Museum of Minnesota (www.smm.org). Senior package pricing includes their latest exhibition, an Omnitheater movie, full access to the galleries, coffee and a bakery item for just $28.

Retailers
Who knew you could get a discount on everything from bedding to bunt pans? Kohl’s Department Store (www.kohls.com) in Brooklyn Center, Maple Grove, Blaine and Coon Rapids offer senior citizen shoppers 60 and over a 15% discount every Wednesday. Make Wednesday your shopping day and also head to Herberger’s (www.herbergers.com) in Roseville and Christopher & Banks (www.christopherandbanks.com) in Plymouth to get 10% off. For crafts and hobby supplies, shop Michael’s (www.michaels.com) in Crystal, Coon Rapids, Maple Grove or Roseville on Tuesdays that offer 10% off to AARP members (www.aarp.org).

Travel
If you’re looking for lodging while visiting a loved one at a Saint Therese community, consider a Choice Hotel (www.choicehotels.com) which offers 10% off to AARP members. For example, there’s the Comfort Inn in Brooklyn Center and Quality Inn Northtown in Coon Rapids. Traveling by plane? Park your car at the Park ‘N Fly or EZ-Air Park (www.airport-parking-cheap.com) on the way out and receive a senior discount.

Saint Therese is dedicated to nurturing each resident’s quality of life whether they’re in a senior apartment or long term care. Just by engaging in simple activities like shopping or enjoying a meal, seniors can maintain a connection with others and their community, which enriches their physical, social and emotional well-being.
