Volunteering with Purpose

Ruth, Saint Therese at Oxbow Lake tenant, knows a little something about staying busy.

Despite the tireless demands of raising six children and a nursing career, she has always found time to give back. Therefore, after moving to Saint Therese more than four years ago from Missouri, getting involved was only natural.

Several days a week Ruth can be found combining her love of God and passion for volunteering by helping provide pastoral care to her friends and neighbors at Oxbow Lake. Her volunteerism at Saint Therese began by serving as a Eucharistic minister and quickly evolved to lecturing and singing, among other various activities.

"If I see a need, I like to help," Ruth said.

Although Ruth volunteers several hours a week, she doesn’t feel she goes above and beyond.

"Helping is something I enjoy, so I feel it is a privilege to serve," said Ruth.

Throughout the years, Ruth has volunteered at many organizations. She has been an active volunteer with various parishes as she moved around the country. She helped fundraise for the Champlin library with an annual ice cream social and other activities. Ruth has also involved her children, instilling them with her same selfless spirit.

Whether she’s making crafts to sell at Oxbow Lake’s Treasure and Treats fundraiser or driving her neighbor to an appointment, Ruth views service not as an obligation, but as a fulfilling part of life.

Perhaps it is that philosophy that has encouraged Ruth to dedicate her life to others. Staying involved also helps Ruth stay in contact with others, one of her most cherished activities at Oxbow Lake.

"I like the comradery," she said. "I enjoy getting together with all walks of life. If there is something I haven’t seen or done, there is always someone around who can fill me in. I enjoy experiencing life through the eyes of others. "

Volunteers play an integral role at Saint Therese, providing additional support to the residents, tenants and families who call our communities home. For more information on how to volunteer at Saint Therese call 763.531.5075 or visit sttheresemn.org/volunteer.
